One year since installation, my god, time flyes! No alarms, no issues and no problems. That is what Autosync has been given so far except for the fantastic results when it comes to reduction of emissions, consumption and maintenance demand.

The ships whole consumption has been reduced by 4%! That affect has been reached even though ME2 (Autosync engine) only have produced approx, 38% of the total produced KW. When recalculated, the estimated savings, would be 10,5% if all engines would have the system installed. A absolutely fantastic number and result, much higher than we anticipated and very close to the lab results.

Discussions are already on the way with several other shipping companies that wants to join the Autosync system to the engines.

“Man oh Man!” The Island of Donsö can certainly organize a productive and very fun convention. Many good discussions and talk with several shipping companies insures us that the future of the Autosync system is very positive. Now we are looking forward to October and the one year anniversary of the Autosync full scale engine test.

So far the Sulzer 8L40 Autosync system has been running for six months without any issues or problems. No changes or alterations have been needed and the crew are very happy and confident with the system function. We have realised that the ship doesn´t have a reliable consumption measuring on individual engines so all data is collected from the complete propulsion consumption. The positive affects from the system is easy to see and we can at least give you a pre info that it is above 3%. The final result will be announced in october this year when the system has been running for one full year.

The first system is now installed on a Sulzer 8L40. Considering that it was the first, ever, installation all went very easy and according to how it was planned. Engine started with no hesitation at first try and the result didn´t take long to see. Visual smoke emissions from the funnels are estimated to be about 50% less on port funnel (ME2/ Autosync) than on Starboard (ME3) funnel. Already after 24hours we noticed a considerable consumption reduction but of coarse it is to early to give any official numbers.

It took some time but the reason was solely that they wasn´t sure of how to approve it. The concern was if the system affected the engines emissions in a negative way. After discussions, including DNV personel from both Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany the system was designed approved. Now the full scale engine installation can proceed.

Even though we were hoping for the DNV approval before the vacation period, you can´t stop the summer from coming. DNV wasn´t able to finalize the approval prior to their summer vacation but have promised that the approval will be given as soon as possible after the vacation period.

Autosync is now ready for shipment and we are just waiting for the design approval from DNV-GL. Hopefully we will be able to proceed with the installation before the summer vacation period.

The vessel have been decided and “all systems are good to go!”

Still we will keep the name of vessel and owner a secret. The Ship sail the mediterranean on a fixed route. They have a installed fuel measuring system and the system will be installed on engine number 2 (of 4). The engine type is a Sulzer 40 L8. We will perform a ship check in the upcoming days and then the design of brackets etc will start.

Finally! all lab tests are done and we are ready for a full scale engine test. As of now the tests have shown a reduction of 13% when comparing a conventional fuel valve with a Autosync fuel valve. Lets just hope that we get the same result on the future full scale engine test. Discussions with a couple of shipping companies is ongoing but it is still to early to announce where it will be tested.

The early lab tests resulted in a redesign of some parts in the Autosync valve. This is the reason for the lab tests and the changes have been very successful. So far all results have been better then anticipated and we hoped.

After months of technical design and mechanical tests the lab tests are now started. The first Autosync valves to be tested are for W46 and S40 engines.

Unfortunately the pandemic hit hard on most companies and especially the new started. Optixmarine was in a very sensitive situation when the news of the pandemic hit. We had just installed and started the first OptixDrive on M/T Solero, we were sailing towards the mediterranean sea with spain as next port of call. All the news channels declared that europe were about to close all borders. We left the ship and we literally heard the doors close behind us all the way up to Sweden. What followed thereafter was a period in which it was impossible to have good product support or follow ups with the vessels. New products demand a good and tight relationship between the supplier and the working crew. A support and a “holding hand” process to overcome first time experiences such as new sounds, new vibrations and new way of operating. This type type of relationship and support was impossible to get during the pandemic period and unfortunately the Optixdrive onboard the Donsö tank vessels was affected by this. Optixmarine took a very hard hit due to this and it has taken up until now for the team to strengthen and rise their vision towards new goals and new visions. The OptixDrive is still available but the next goal is to finalize and aim for full tests of the Autosync system. Now the whole team have come together and is gathering energy for the development of a full scale Autosync system. The goal is to have the lab tests done by next fall and hopefully have a successful full scale engine test during 2024.

July is here and finally the summerheat has arrived! We look forward to some vacation and “charge our batteries” before work begins again.

The last preparations are being made for the Nor-Shipping fair. We will hold two events during the fair; first out is the product release of OptixAutosync on the 4th of June at 16:00. This is the third product of the “Optix family” and we look forward to the market’s reactions on this system and its effects. The second event is the handing over of Rederi AB Donsötank’s first Optixdrive unit to be installed on their vessel M/T Solando, wich takes place on the 5th of June at 14:00.

Donsötank M/T Solando has been on a shipyard visit and we took the opportunity to make the preparations onboard for the installation of their Optixdrive.  The company has ordered two Optixdrives for their vessels M/T Solando & M/T Solero. All the complementing equipment and foundations were installed and now we are just waiting for the production and classification of their Optixdrive to be completed.

The development of our third product is in full progress. Like our other two products, it will help you with energy and fuel optimization. The product will be presented during our product release on 4/6 2019 at Nor-Shipping. Until then we keep it a secret but we can reveal some of the effects it brings; how about a documented fuel saving of over 8%!

“Free electricity during voyage”

AB Veritas tankers, Veritas Astorias OptixDrive has now been running for almost thousand hours. The final result in savings during a period of two months with same conditions in 2016 and 2018 have resulted in a decrease of main engine fuel consumption with 1kg/Nm including the production of 300kw from the shaft generator for the hotel load during vouage. In short term the increase of main engine efficiency due to the kw load from the shaft generator (that does not affect the hydrodynamics of the hull) has resulted that all kw produced by the main engine is more efficient. The result is a reduction with 1kg/Nm and free electricity during voyage. The annual savings for Veritas tanker and the Veritas Astoria is approx, $240 000.

After extensive work together with Bureau veritas the Optixdrive 1.5 that will be delivered to AB Veritas tankers vessel M/S Astoria has now been class approved. The FAT approval will be carried out on the 7th of march at Optixmarine testcenter in Lidköping Sweden. This is a big milestone for the product and for Optixmarine AB.

To be able to test run all produced Optixdrives that goes out on the market, Optixmarine has invested in a frequency controlled test bench that provides possibility to run the gearbox at variable rpm. This way the team can tune in the optixdrive controlsystem already in the factory.

We also welcome Johannes Forssén to the team. Johannes takes the seat as Process Control Manager.

We have since the beginning of the year expanded Team OptixMarine and been working intensely with preparing the installation onboard Astoria. Along the way several design improvements have been done, for enabling even higher efficiency at the main engines optimal rpm. Production has started and installation is planned during Q2 2017.
